The PB Racing model car company produced the Mustang X3 quite some time ago and we have decided to republish the manual on-line as a reference. |
This will help both those who still have one of these cars as well any other modeller who is interested in cars from the past. |

| Front & Rear Differentials |
Pack No. 46/100A
NOTE: Please grease all moving parts before final assembly.
Take the four pinion shafts (4mm diameter by 23.8mm long 22/300) and, using the pinions themselves as a guide to keep the pins vertical, tap the pins into the differential end plate (46/200) so that only about 2mm protrudes from the top of the pinion. |

Fit a half shaft (5mm diameter shaft with integral gear) (46/202) to the gear side of the differential case so that the gear side of the differential case so that the gear teeth are on the same side as the pinion shafts. Now fit the pinions (16/204) (in meshing pairs) so that the plain diameters are facing in opposite directions. Fit the other half shaft (46/202) and, after filling the case completely with light grease, fit the recessed side over the pinions taking care to correctly locate the protruding ends of the pinion shafts. |
Fit the two 4-40 x 1" socket cap screws into the gear side of the differential and through the clearance holes in the plain side. Now remove all excess grease from the assembly and fit the hexagonal retainer to the plain side using silicone sealer to seal the recessed side of the hexagon to the differential case.
The two 4-40 x 1" screws should now be tightened and the unit checked for differential action. |

| The appropriate bevel gear, bearings and drive cups should now be fitted as shown. NOTE:- As the grub screws which locate the drive cups are locking down onto hardened half shafts it is a good idea to grind the serrations off the ends of the grub screws to provide a good, flat, end. Fit these grub screws with thread locking compound after de-greasing both screw and drive cup with either a purpose made de-greaser or a solvent such as cigarette lighter fluid. |
| Differential Housing |
Pack No. 46/103
Fit two 7 x 19 x 6mm bearings (22/298S) to the differential pinion housing and then fit the bevel pinion (46/206) to the bearings as shown. Assemble the differential housing and fit the differential as shown. NOTE:- Check side plate assembly for correct orientation - See photograph above - this provides the necessary clearance for the brake support moulding. |
| Brake & Gear Carrier |
Pack No. 43/107
Take the front gear carrier (43/237) (long) and the rear gear carrier (43/239) (short) and secure them to the pinion shafts protruding from the differential housings using M4 x 5mm grub screws (ground ends preferred) and thread locking compound. |
The short length of 7mm shafting (43/237) should be fitted to the end of the front gear carrier (43/237) and secured with an M4 grub screw (22/284) which, when located on the flat provided on the shaft, will leave approximately 12mm of shaft protruding. Fit a brake disk to the front assembly and then a 31T gear (43/244A), which should be secured with a circlip (22/259). Repeat this step for the rear (short) assembly, but use a 37T gear (43/242) and no extension shaft.
The photographs above show the two fully assembled differential housings. |

The brakes cams should now be rounded off as shown in the drawing. Please note that this shaping is vital for adequate brake operation. The brake cam curvature should be similar to the outside of a pencil.
Please refer to our Brake Cam Modification article for further details. |
Assemble the brakes shoes to the brake support moulding with two M4 x 12mm screws and adjust the screws to allow the brake disk to be an easy fit between the two pads with the brake cam fitted. Temporarily fit the brake lever (47/201) and secure it with an M4 x 5mm grub screw (22/284).
The brake pad/moulding sub-assembly will be required later. |
